Garden Lounge Set: Steps for Maintenance and Cleaning

For centuries, people have been choosing wicker furniture because it is beautiful and durable. Garden Lounge Set is ideal for a variety of spaces including sunrooms, patios and decks. The proper maintenance can help extend the life of your favorite wicker pieces. Once you find the ideal wicker furniture, you want to preserve it for years to come. Learn how to care for wicker furniture below.

Wicker Furniture

Wicker will fade and crack if exposed to too much harsh sunlight. Cover your wicker furniture when not in use. Covering also helps prevent mildew from working its way into the cracks and crevices between individual wicker fibers.

When cleaning wicker, avoid harsh or abrasive treatments. A mixture of water and mild soap is best. Apply sparingly — do not soak wicker. Rinse and wipe dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. If necessary, vacuum the wicker first with a brush attachment to remove large debris and loose dirt.

Wood Garden Furniture Care

Kettler uses hardwood in its garden furniture. Hardwood is a higher quality material compared to softwood which requires a different treatment. Acacia and teak furniture is naturally more durable than softwoods, such as pine, due to its high oil content.

Clean with a wet cloth or soft-bristled brush and soapy water at least once a year. We recommend cleaning in the Autumn before the colder months arrive.

Maintain the natural colour of the wood by applying a wood treatment, such as the Kettler hardwood protector which is 4 times more effective than regular oil.

Storing hardwood garden furniture is simple as it can stay outdoors all year round however, we do offer tailored fitted covers for some of our wood furniture.

Metal Furniture

Clean metal surfaces with a simple, mild soap-and-water solution. To restore your metal furniture's luster, take a lint-free cloth and buff it with auto wax (paste or liquid). Lubricate any stiff or creaky moving parts — such as casters, swivels, glides and umbrella mechanisms — using a silicone spray.

If your metal furniture is showing signs of rust or mold, use a fine-grit sandpaper to sand any problem areas. Touch-up with matching paint, applying it in several thin layers. Let each coat dry completely before applying the next.

Additional Tips and Advice

Although rattan may be used outdoors, it’s best not to leave it in the sun or otherwise exposed to the elements. The material will break down much more quickly under these circumstances.

Place rubber stoppers under the legs of rattan. The cushion helps keep the material from cracking or splitting.

Make sure to use boiled linseed oil. Raw linseed oil will not dry or harden. Boiled linseed oil is available at most hardware stores.

Monthly or weekly cleaning is the best way to protect your furniture from rattan and prevent further damage. Also, make a thorough cleaning twice a year. Complete cleaning will take care of the accumulation of dirt and prevent further damage.
