There's likely to be little to gain from copying other companies

Square Enix's HD-2D gaming has been receiving a lot of praise and interest from gamers. Games like Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy have really captured the attention of those who love retro partly due to their distinctive art style.

In a recent interview conducted by 4Gamer (translated from Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano discussed the aesthetic of the graphics and the ways it's implemented in future games for the company. When the interviewer expressed shock at the lack of indie games that have begun to follow the same style, Asano revealed the reason is that it's a bit expensive!

"It's definitely worth noting that it's cost is higher than you'd expect. In that respect, it's perfect to the games that are coming from Square Enix. There's likely to be little to gain from copying other companies," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately it's not stopping Square Enix from releasing more games that are similar to this.

The remake version of Live a Live is set to launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently working on. There are a number of other games that can benefit from the look, so it's interesting to observe what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has clearly put money into this graphic style, Buy D2R items PS4 went on to reveal that there is no present "definitive text," and it will be evolving from game to game.
