Since its inception, the Animal Crossing franchise has been involved in a significant number of collaborations with other Nintendo game series, in particular those involving Pokémon. In previous games, various forms of media have served as a source of inspiration for a variety of elements, including items, outfits, and characters. There are no exceptions, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is not an exception. However, Nintendo has confirmed that there will not be any significant new content added to buy ACNH bells after the 2.0 update is made available to players. It is safe to assume that this precludes the possibility of any further crossovers. As a consequence of this, fans of Animal Crossing have begun to mull over the prospect of a sequel to New Horizons, which in turn raises the question of which Nintendo franchises might be included as crossovers in the next installment of the Animal Crossing video game series.
Since the very first Animal Crossing game, Dobutso no Mori, which featured a variety of Easter eggs and references to the various Legend of Zelda games, there have been crossovers between the series. These cameos became more noticeable as the series progressed, which is a sign that they were important. Since the release of the Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf, Wolf Link now appears in the game as a resident of the player's town and can even be invited to stay there. Using amiibo, players can even bring Sanrio crossover villagers into their games of Animal Crossing. This was first implemented in the New Leaf update for the Welcome amiibo, and it has since been implemented in Pocket Camp and New Horizons as well. Unfortunately, after the 2.0 New Horizons update is released in late 2021, there will be very little chance of there being another major crossover in New Horizons. If there is one, it will likely be a minor one. However, when the next Animal Crossing game is released, fans of the franchise might be able to see some of their favorite Nintendo games make an appearance in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons sequel.

There have already been crossovers between different Nintendo games in the Mario Kart series, which is considered to be, along with Wario, one of the most popular spinoff game series based on the Mario franchise. As a direct consequence of this, it is entirely conceivable that elements taken from Mario Kart will start to show up in other video game series. In previous iterations of Mario Kart, playable characters from The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, and even Animal Crossing itself made an appearance. A good way to bring everything full circle could be to include racing uniforms or race cars in the New Horizons sequel. This would be an excellent way to bring things back around.
It's possible that the next Animal Crossing game will include driving as part of a Mario Kart crossover, which will allow players to move more quickly throughout their town. Fans of the Animal Crossing series were taken to a new location in New Horizons, and they were given the opportunity to design an entire island. As a result, many of these players believe that the sequel to Animal Crossing: New Horizons should take place in a more expansive setting. Working with a large city that is similar to that seen in Animal Crossing: City Folk but is this time customizable would open up a lot of opportunities for creative new gameplay mechanics to be implemented. Because players in New Horizons are already able to lay down their own unique routes, the follow-up to New Horizons could very easily include paved roads and racetracks.

However, when it comes to Nintendo games that could serve as models for new residents of Animal Crossing, the Fire Emblem series is one of the few places that stands out as a particularly good option. Each game features dozens of distinct characters, and nearly all of them, if reimagined as villagers, could make for interesting additions to the population. In the past, Nintendo has never voiced any opposition to the idea of allowing Fire Emblem to collaborate in some way with other games. For example, there are quite a few Fire Emblem characters included in Super Smash Bros., which is something that has actually gotten some of the game's fans to criticize the inclusion of these characters. A fun addition to the New Horizons sequel would be even something as simple as the addition of outfits with a Fire Emblem motif. It is anyone's guess as to whether this will involve anything as significant as new items, outfits, or villagers. However, it is likely that this will involve at least some of these things.
