In a new interview on D2R Items (translated through Nintendo Everything), Triangle Strategy producer Tomoya Asano discussed the style of graphics, and the way it's being implemented in future games for the company. When the interviewer expressed surprise at the fact that indie games haven't been able to replicate the style, Asano revealed the reason that it's quite expensive!

"It's most likely worth noting that it costs more than you'd imagine. In that respect, it's a good match for the titles want out of Square Enix. It's possible that there's nothing to gain from other companies copying it," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately it's not stopping Square Enix from releasing more games in this style.

The remake version of Live a Live is set to be released exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, while a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently in development. There are many other games which could benefit from this style and it will be interesting to discover which games Square Enix does with HD-2D next. While the company has clearly invested in this design style, Asano went on to reveal that there is no currently a "definitive bible," and it will remain evolving from Game to Game.

"We aren't putting together something like this. The way in which it's written differs with each film, and the HD-2D style is different each time. In the case of Live A Live for example it's the prehistoric setting that's different. Diablo 2 Resurrected Items portion will differ from the sci-fi scenario.
