One of the rumours circulating prior to D2R Items 2018 was that Blizzard was planning to announce an announcement of a Diablo Remaster, but that wasn't the case. The company did, however unveil Diablo IV to much celebration from the fans after the disappointing welcome to Diablo Immortal announcement a year prior.
The Schaefer brothers and Brevik created the first Diablo in their own studio Condor which Blizzard acquired just before the release of the original Diablo at the time of its release in. Erich Schaefer claimed that the purchase could not have come at more appropriate time since Condor was in financial problems. He told me that the studio was just scraping by and was apparently unable to raise enough money to pay some of its tax obligations.
"We did not pay our payroll taxes. These are taxes we withhold from our employees. We're required to pay taxes to the federal government. The tax was never sent to the government," Erich Schaefer explained. "We were almost empty of cash. When we got up in the morning, and are given a message on our calendar that reads "You have three days to pay or you'll be in go to jail.' It was a rough. It was a bit scary. We came up with a little money (to pay the tax) Then, fortunately, the deal that turned us into Blizzard came around right at the right moment to spare our egos."
Also , during the panel discussion, Max cheap d2r items revealed that Condor agreed to produce the first Diablo to sell for $300.000. which was "woefully not enough." He claimed that the studio at the time that it was "always in a state of financial crisis," which was very stress-inducing. It's no surprise that the financial stability that the acquisition by Blizzard could bring was appealing to the team. It eventually went on to make Diablo also.
