World of Warcraft Is Getting Controller Support With Shadowlands However, Don't Expect An Xbox Port

Among many other things, World of Warcraft 's scheduled Shadowlands expansion introduces official controller support to the game in the very first instance since the MMO made its debut for PC during 2004. In a recent interview with P2Pah Game director Ion Hazzikostas spoke about why Blizzard is making the switch to controllers and it doesn't mean that a console version of WoW will be coming.

Hazzikostas revealed that the controller support for WoW will take the form of giving users access to the API (API) that will allow for controller setup. There will be no way to simply connect to an Xbox or PlayStation controller and play WoW with this API, however this API access will permit players who use the Xbox Adaptive Controller and other controllers access to the game in a way that best suits their needs.

This new controller feature is designed to allow players with physical disabilities and other impairments the ability to enjoy WoW without too much hassle, Hazzikostas said.

"It's more about direct API access that's targeted at those in the community of accessibility. There are lots of users who do not have the ability to utilize mice and keyboards or other traditional tools for controlling their devices. They have used a variety of difficult workarounds in order to obtain devices like Microsoft's powerful game controller that allow them to connect with the world of games," said the Microsoft CEO. "We decided to end the necessity of jumping through all those hoops. Additionally, we would like to be more explicit in our support of the WoTLK Classic Gold. We're interested to see what this community generally creates."
