In recent months, the name Daniel Roth has been thrust back into the limelight following news of its revival under the stewardship of seasoned watchmakers Michel Navas and Enrico Barbasini of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton in Meyran, Switzerland. But it wasn't just an announcement of a rebirth that caught our attention, but the follow-up soon after that showed us what the first actual watch would be: A Tourbillon Souscription paying homage to one associated with Roth's earliest watches – the C187, first produced for the London Retailer Asprey. But that's Daniel Roth now - and today we are focused on digging into the Daniel Roth of the past, a brand whose vintage watches have been heating up steadily in collector circles. We had a chance to visit La Fabrique du Temps earlier this year where the team there brought out the goods, e. g. trays full of classic Daniel Roth, specifically his first-series designs that we assume will inform the new direction of the brand's modern revival.
For those who may be less familiar with Daniel Roth the man, he is best known for his work aiding in the rebirth regarding Breguet some four decades ago. Not satisfied with contributing merely to the success of the historic brand, and wanting to put his own stamp on horology, Roth began their own personal venture in 1989, creating their eponymous brand name. From '89 to the mid-nineties, Roth worked on pieces with the aforementioned Asprey, and with such luminaries as Philippe Dufour.
Most collectors were not wise to what Roth was crafting at the time, however the decades since have proven him to be one of the most consequential watchmakers from the modern era, and we got a close look at his original pieces -- everything from the tourbillon C187 to prototypes to pieces with movements made in collaboration with Dufour. Each piece is remarkable individually, nevertheless the entire collection shines as a whole.
As we continue to wait for further developments within the new beginnings of the Roth brand today, we relished this front-row seat to horological history. This video, hosted by Navas and Barbasini, lays out the history and the future of Daniel Roth and we hope you enjoy this look into the archives.
