Ffxiv Gil is a game currency used to buy items, equipment and general resources. It's easy to come by and is generally a better option than Gold for core gameplay (except for repairs and flights).
Quests, levequests, dungeons and duty roulettes all give from a small amount up to a significant amount of Gil. Food buffs also net some as well.

Gathering
A gathering is a group of people or things. The word is also used in many contexts that refer to a mass assembly or crowd. For example, “a large gathering of engineers and scientists.”

Having enough gil can also give players a chance to try out different content and increase their confidence to explore deep in the game’s world. Besides these obvious uses, having a lot of gil is just a fun goal to work towards!
Combat
In theory, combat should be the quickest way to make Gil in FFXIV. With dungeons that pay out a small salary upon completion and the ability to carry around dozens of "Leve Allowances" that refresh every 12 real-world hours, players should be able to passively accrue hundreds of thousands of gil a week just by running Old Sharlayan leves.
However, there are many other pitfalls to this method of gil making. The most obvious is that gear is expensive. In addition to the hefty price tags on new gear, repairing older sets can cost tens of thousands at a time. There are also teleport costs, which quickly add up as you move between zones. And then there is the Market Board undercutting war, which can eat into your profits.
Market Board
Unlike most MMOs, Final Fantasy XIV has a real-time market board. This system lets you sell your collected items and crafted goods to other players through Retainers that will manage the sale for you.
This makes it possible to earn a decent amount of Gil in almost all play sessions. The best times to sell are just before a new patch when lots of people are trying to stock up, or after a major update when the demand is high for gear and materials.
The market board could use some improvements. Like a fixed price for each item that prevents MB bots from perpetually undercutting, or listing fees when you sell an item (like in WoW). It would also be nice to have more small Gil sinks built into the core gameplay compared to the gold sinks of repairs and flights.
