"People were already only interacting with each other online, digitally, and so it was a really natural extension," said Trevor Wood, an 11th-grade English teacher and adviser for the college's video game team. "The district and the school were really interested in the movie game club flourishing, because it had been one of the only methods children could interact with one another socially."

This season, the club also dove into the competitive side of gambling, hard high schoolers out of Washington and across the country in an assortment of esports. The group has handled events in"Mario Kart" and"League of Legends," with nominal success, but Velazquez's success might help propel the club. Wood explained the club"Super Smash Bros." staff is nearing the playoffs at the state contest and stays undefeated.

"I think there are far more people like Jair at your ordinary school than you would believe," Wood said. "People that are crazy good at a video game, they simply haven't had an outlet to get it anything more than random matchmaking online." After moving to Lake Stevens in the fall of 2019, Velazquez didn't have a lot of time at college before doors were shuttered in the spring.
